How to safely download .dot files and other files containing macros
Many of the files available to download from the Equal Web site are Word® document templates. These have a .dot extension and are indicated with the
icon. Templates are a special type of Word document that can hold text, styles, macros, keyboard shortcuts, custom toolbars and AutoText entries. In some cases, Excel® spreadsheet files (marked as
) also contain similar functions. Because these templates allow the Support Unit to create working documents and forms, the files are often important budgetary or administrative documents that are essential to the proper running of the Equal programme.
Several Development Partnerships have reported problems when downloading these files. The following instructions and screenshots are provided to help make sure that you download the templates successfully and preserve their functionality on your computer.
For Windows users
- First, follow the link for the document you want in the ‘Download’ column of the table:

- When the File Download dialogue box appears, choose to save the file on your computer:

- Using the Save As dialogue box, find a location on your computer where you can save the file. Make sure that the document has a
.dotextension, then choose Save:
- The file will download to the location on your computer that you specified.

- The file icon will be the Word document template icon:
